One thing I hate the most about the second moto or main (for you flat track guys) is that the race groove is worn in the track causing it to become a one line affair. This makes it extremely difficult to make passes in a timely manner. This often causes you to reach deep into your bags of tricks to find the best areas and techniques to make passes. You will usually find some techniques that may be considered dirty or aggressive to some riders but they are necessary in order for you to get the win. I am going to share a few of my techniques I have used during races.

The first is more common than you think and I use it often in flat track racing: block passing. This technique requires you to be an aggressive rider and it also requires a high level of commitment to perform. You will need to “set up” the other rider a few turns prior to the turn you want to perform the block pass in. This involves putting pressure on him by showing a wheel and running right on his rear tires in order to intimidate him a little so that he is more forgiving when you execute the block pass. As you approach your desired corner, you want be on the inside and you will need to stay on the gas a second longer than the other rider does.

As you go into the corner start to push the rider towards the outside (don’t make contact). As you get into the apex slow down almost to a stop, this forces the other rider to check up and lose all of their momentum in the turn. Once you accomplish that square up the turn and motor out of it. You have just made a clean block pass and have a little room to spare as the other rider has to shake it off and get his momentum back up. This technique becomes dirty if you run into the other rider as you make the pass. A little contact is ok but deliberately hitting a rider will get you into trouble.

A less aggressive approach to block passing is to stay on the gas longer than the other rider going into a sweeper turn and passing him with speed rather than aggression. You can also pressure another rider into making a mistake. This is a more clean way to pass as it requires no deliberate effort on your part. All you have to do is get into the other rider’s head and force him to make a mistake. You will need to be alert as the mistake may be minute and you need to be able to take advantage of it as soon as it happens. The ultimate way to pass is to get the jump off of the line and beat everybody to the first turn! If you can do that and set a fast pace you will be able to win very easily (easier said than done of course!).

The best advice I can give you is to get out there and try new things. Remember to never follow the other rider. Always be on the alert for opportunities to pass and for new lines to open up. Good bike control will help you out a lot for these techniques to work properly. You need to have full confidence in yourself and your machine. So what are you waiting for get out there and start passing!! I will see you on the other side of the checker’s!

By Hope Graves

Dirt track racing is the single most common form of auto racing in the U.S.

Dierks Bentley says it best in one of his top songs… “Sideways”

“Worked all week, now it’s time to play

Gonna get a little sideways”

That right there describes any man that ever put on a dirt track racing helmet!

Dirt Track Racing is a weekend hobby. It is THE time for these men to shine under the bright night lights!

A friend of mine said it best…. For God SO Loved The World… He gave us Dirt Track Racing!

The Main Objective… Is the Winners Circle

Dirt tracks consist of a clay oval with multiple divisions of cars all competing for the same thing… money, trophy, points and bragging rights for the week… There can only be ONE WINNER in each division.. you know the famous saying… 2nd place is just the first loser…

Divisions range from the all powerful V8′s to the screaming 4 cylinders, each class is tailored.

Track surfaces can be made up from any soil but most are clay based and always watered before races to help keep them tacky! Some tracks are flat.. but most have banking! Tracks range in size.. you have 1/2 mile, 3/4 mile, 1/8 mile… each track is different…

RULES… You Always Have Rules…

Every dirt track provides rule books outlining each division; including dimensions, engine size, equipment requirements, etc…. It’s THE LAW written in black and white! Most track rules are similar if not the same… This helps tracks to be able to field as many race cars as possible!

NOT every racer abides by the rules… This makes for some REAL excitement! You’ve heard the statement…. “Hey Ya’ll WATCH THIS”

Going Green… On With The Show…

Time to let them engines roar.. time to get down and dirty!

First things First is Hot laps… drivers take a few laps around the oval to warm them babies up, at this time the fans are gathering in the stands. After a round of Hot Laps you move right along into the Heat Races. Placement for heat races is derived from driver sign in, every driver draws.. and you can bet they all want that #1 spot. Finishing order of the Heats set the stage for the MAIN EVENT!!! You hear the chatter thru the stands “Did you see what I saw?” Man, Child and Woman alike are filled with anticipation… Hearts pounding ready for that Green Flag!

WHO ARE RACE CAR DRIVERS?… THEY ARE OUR IDOLS!

Who enjoy the thrill of going fast and sliding left! Some racers elect to give their winnings to great charities such as the Shriners!

FAST CARS RACE SO WEAK LEGS CAN WALK!!

Drivers are the kid’s Heroes!

I am a wife to a weekend dirt tracker. It is a family hobby.

Asphalt driving seems quite easy when one watches it on TV or from the grandstands. But, it is wrong to underestimate asphalt driving.

A good asphalt driver is not the one who needs more seat time or the one who depends on skills achieved as a legacy by some different inheritance of chromosome.

An ideal asphalt driver adopts a more consistent and a rather smooth driving style while learning how to pass and defend a position. The less the driver turns the steering wheel, the better it is for him.

However, this is not the case in dirt track racing.

Though the dirt track racers also strive for smoothness, they ensure that they contend with the car at all kinds of attitudes along their way. This requires a lot of steering input while the posterior tells the driver where to steer and how far!

However, at high speed and at a 45-degree angle to the direction of travel, it is indeed quite difficult to run a few inches off your competitor’s door.

The most common driving style involves steering first to the left and then right, and then left again coming up off the corner.

Bear in mind that the driver’s hands can get crossed up and he or she can loose the sense of where the wheels are straight-ahead if the car gets too far around at mid-turn.

Dirt track racing does involve plenty of risk factors but despite the complexities of dirt track racing, lots of teams and fans love to compete and watch this sport.

No doubt, unlike asphalt racing, dirt racing represents over 60 percent of the short track circle track racing in America.

Dirt track racing is one of the most common types of car racing in the US. It is usually done on oval tracks. There are even local and regional racetracks located in the country, approximately around 1.500 racetracks so to speak. By the figure alone, it can be definitely said that it has grown to much popularity and thus many are joining this type of car racing. It is always a must to wear the best and good quality dirt track racing gear. This is so to protect yourself from any injury that might occur during the race.

One of the common dirt track racing gear is the helmet. It does protect your head especially when driving in a fast speed, there might be some tendencies that you will bump to another car, or swivel around on the track. This should be one of the top lists that you should secure for your safety. Bear in mind to purchase the helmet from a reputable manufacturer at least you will have the assurance that it is of good quality and you are safe to use it.

Another dirt track racing gear is your jacket. Yes, you want of course to look good while driving. But make sure that the jacket you are wearing will make you feel comfortable while driving and much more can hurdle the intensity level that you are going to be into especially when you are on the racing. Also, do not forget about your shoes. Always remember, your feet are doing a lot of hard work while you are on the racing. Make sure the shoes you are going to wear can stand the test of time, and is fit enough not to lose itself especially when you are running on a high speed.

The gloves are another dirt track racing gear that you should get one for yourself. When driving, your hands might get sweaty, or you might lose a grip on the steering wheel. It is very necessary that you can get hold of it while driving, so that you will not lose your focus and will reach the ultimate of winning the race.

All the dirt track racing gear mentioned are the basics that you should have when you are on the race. Safety should come first before anything else. It is a race; cars run at a higher speed competing with each other. Anything can happen during the race, it is better make yourself safe first before thinking winning the race.
